The hot spring at On-yado Tsutaya is soft water rising from sacred Mount Ontake (Kiso Ontake). The scent of wood and the sound of the river together tell your whole body that you have arrived in Kiso. The spring type is a carbon-dioxide–calcium–bicarbonate cold mineral spring, said to help with neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive disorders, sensitivity to cold, fatigue recovery, general health, cuts, burns, chronic skin conditions, high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis.

What matters on an onsen trip is not luxury alone, but wanting to return to the bath again and again between walking, eating and sleeping. Give your mood to the scenery in the riverside open-air bath, then warm yourself calmly in the indoor bath. That rhythm of bathing gives a natural pace to your time at the inn: an onsen experience that deepens quietly, with the memory of the Kiso Road, rather than showy ornament.

After enjoying the sound of the river in the open-air bath, head to the indoor herbal bath. Inside the bath, we offer a herbal bath using "Hyakusoyaku," a traditional remedy cherished in the Kiso Valley. Known as the "divine medicine," Hyakusoyaku is made from the bark of the Amur cork tree, which grows naturally on the sacred Mount Kiso Ontake. The bath, rich in the tree's ingredients, gently envelops your skin and warms your body.

The charm of Kiso's baths lies in the meeting of nature's bounty and the wisdom of local living in one bathhouse. Enjoy the onsen (hot spring) as a gift from the earth in the open-air bath, and the Hyakusoyaku bath, passed down through generations in Kiso, in the indoor bath. As you move between the two, savor the leisurely passage of time along the Kiso Road.
